Call for Nominations for the AFP 2019 Board of Directors

As Immediate Past-Chair of AFP, it is my great honor to chair the Committee on Directorship (COD) for our Association. The COD serves as the nominating committee for AFP. Each member takes his or her responsibilities very seriously. The outstanding leadership the AFP board of directors has demonstrated through the years comes from the continuing efforts you make in participating in the governance process.
This year, the Committee on Directorship will select the next chair-elect. Candidates nominated for chair-elect will be required to answer a uniform set of questions sent to them directly. If you choose to nominate a chair-elect candidate, it will be important for you to inform the candidate of this requirement. Chair-elect nomination forms must be received no later than June 22, 2018. All nomination forms must be submitted using the nomination form found on the AFP website home page. Please note that the deadline for all chair-elect nominations is earlier than all other positions!
In addition, the COD will determine a slate of five officers (Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Chair of Membership Services, Vice Chair of Professional Development and Vice Chair of External Relations) and a slate of ten at-large directors to serve on the AFP board starting January 2019. Per the new bylaws, there will be fewer board seats for the COD to fill. Elected board terms are
one-year or two-year terms depending on the position they serve. No elected director may serve more than eight years consecutively on the board in any combination of director categories, excluding the chair-elect track. However, individuals may return to the board after a minimum one-year break in service but are not eligible to serve in an officer position that they may have previously held.
I encourage you to nominate qualified individuals who have distinguished themselves by advancing our profession and/or our association. You or your chapter may nominate any qualified candidate to serve on the board for a seat as an officer or an at-large director. Remember, you may self-nominate, nominate a colleague, or invite your chapter to nominate you or a colleague. Prior to making any nominations, please carefully review the criteria for service. Deadline for submission of completed nominations for officer or at-large positions is June 29, 2018.
Please be thorough and provide as much information as possible about the candidate. Some candidates may be asked to supply supplementary information to the Committee to ensure thoughtful consideration. Please contact your nominee in advance of submitting the nomination to determine their willingness to serve. Finally, a current brief bio and photo must accompany the completed Nomination Form.
The Committee on Directorship has identified a number of desired attributes that will be part of the selection process for new board members as follows:
- Leadership ability which demonstrates the skills needed to govern a professional association, and
- No less than two (2) years of volunteer service to AFP, philanthropy and the community locally, nationally and/or internationally
Other factors the COD will consider when reviewing the nominees are: five (5) years’ experience and/or employment in the profession or in an industry that serves philanthropy and/or fundraising, education/training or relevant credentialing, geographic location, diversity (all inclusive), type of professional practice, support of the AFP Foundations for Philanthropy, like-size chapter groupings (I-V), membership current and in good standing (has signed the Code of Ethical Standards) and specific leadership needs of the association at the time candidate is being considered.
Remember, the deadline for the chair-elect position is June 22nd, all other officer and/or director positions is due no later than June 29th.
